Friendship through Service!
Some Facts about the WCCR
- The Women’s Club was founded in 1940. Next year is our 70th birthday!
- We are an English-speaking club, but we have women originating from 25 or more countries.
- We have over 250 members, ranging in age from 29 to 95.
- Today we have 3 main goals: friendship, providing scholarships for Costa Rican children, and developing children’s interest in reading for fun by equipping libraries in the public schools.
- The club was originally intended to be social, but due to WWII there was a need for a service organization.
- Last year we donated $39,000 to the above children’s causes.
- In 1942 the club worked for the establishment of first aid stations, and later helped develop the Allied War Relief.
- An early effort involved providing child daycare for impoverished working mothers.
- Previous WCCR projects included providing the first mammogram machine in Costa Rica and, in 2001, the development of an award-winning program to raise awareness of domestic abuse and some ways to combat it.
- Our friendship mission is accomplished by welcoming new women into the community and introducing them to our wonderful, colorful variety of members, both new and old. Many of them have incredible accomplishments and great stories to tell.
- We also have social events such as our barrio teas, lunches, mini-fundraisers, dinners and other theme events.
